CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — On a picture-perfect Thursday night under the lights at Kirkwood High School, the West Collierville Middle School baseball team etched its name into the history books.
With a dominant 5–0 victory over Horace Maynard Middle School (Maynardville, TN), WCMS not only advanced to the TSSAA Middle School Division State Championship game—but did so in historic fashion, throwing the first-ever no-hitter in the history of the tournament.
Right-hander Cameron MacDougall and lefty Paul Cordell, the one-two punch that has anchored the Dragons’ pitching staff all spring, were untouchable on the mound. MacDougall set the tone early, striking out 11 Red Devils over five hitless innings, while Cordell slammed the door with four strikeouts across the final two frames to seal the combined no-hitter.
The duo's 15 total strikeouts not only kept Horace Maynard off the scoreboard—but also goes in the record books. Both threw like seasoned veterans in the biggest game of their early careers.
At the plate, second baseman Wade Stubbs delivered early with a clutch RBI single in the first, scoring Luke Saltsman to give WCMS the only run they would ultimately need. Jake Ponnath added an insurance run in the fifth with a sharp single through the right side, before West Collierville broke things open with three more in the seventh on a pair of passed balls and a balk.
With the win, West Collierville Middle will now play for the first state championship in school history Friday afternoon. First pitch is set for 12:30 p.m. at Austin Peay State University. Fittingly, when this year’s Collierville High School Class of 2025 were eighth graders, it was cross-town rival Collierville Middle School that claimed the state title in the tournament’s inaugural year.
