The West Collierville Middle School baseball team lost, 8-0, versus Brentwood's Woodland Middle School in the TMSAA State Championship game on Saturday evening.

The Dragons fell behind early, 2-0, in the top of the 1st inning and couldn't get anything going to trim the lead. Woodland would again score a pair of runs in the 4th, 5th, and 7th innings.

Hot bats had been a key to success all season long for West Collierville, but they were silenced against two good arms from Woodland. Preston Sumner and Jackson Overcash were the only hitters in the WCMS line-up to get a hit.

Sumner suffered the loss going four innings on the mound. Hudson Snell threw an inning for the Dragons and Thomas Starrett took off the catchers gear to pitch the final two innings. Starrett did not allow a hit and struck out four.

Heads should be high for this special group from West Collierville Middle. They defeated Arlington, Houston, White Station, Munford and Mt. Juliet to reach the championship game.

Congratulations to Head Coach JD Stambaugh, his staff, and all players on the best season in West Collierville Middle School history on the diamond.
